Oon stressannut ihan hemona ens vuoden kurssivalintoja. Koska opiskelen historiaa ja politiikkaa, mun pitää valita kummaltakin laitokselta 60 kreditin arvosta kursseja, joista vaan yksi on pakollinen. Toivottavaa tietenkin olisi, että kurssit jotenkin sivuaisi toisiaan, mutta saa nyt nähdä. Kursseista kerrotaan yllättävän vähän etukäteen, liian vähän itseasiassa, joten valintaprosessi on vähän uhkapeliä. Tähän mennessä oon valinnut vasta politiikan kurssit, ja hissan teen varmaan ensi viikolla sen jälkeen kun olen käynyt puhumassa tutorin kanssa. Hissan kursseista ei oikeen pompannut kuin yksi yli muiden, mutta jos hyvin käy niin saan ottaa politiikan laitokselta vielä yhden kurssin. Modern Political Theory
In this course we examine the modern tradition of political thought. Students will be introduced to the major figures in this tradition – English thinkers such as Hobbes, Locke and Mill – and continental thinkers such as Rousseau and Marx. Through these thinkers, we will explore key themes and concepts such as sovereignty, justice, human nature, property, rights, liberty, democracy and equality.
Tämä on mun ainoa pakollinen kurssi, mutta oisin ottanut tän muutenkin. Tykkään filosofiasta joten odotan ihan innolla! Kesto on vielä koko vuosi mikä on kiva.
The Politics of Vision
This course is concerned with the visual and its discursive political effects. It starts from the premise that vision is not merely a neutral way of seeing the world, but rather is intimately bound up with the political. As such, the course is interested in unpacking the political nature of how we code and construct the world through vision, the position that art and aesthetics play in moderating political debate and even knowledge construction itself, as well as investigating the relationship between ‘seeing’ and ‘doing’ more broadly in terms of surveillance, control and power. In studying these issues, the course will explore topics as diverse as aesthetics, censorship, surveillance, documentary and blockbuster film making, mapping and cartography, travel writing and memory, cosmetic surgery and the visual elements of class politics.
The course will consist of weekly lectures and seminars, as well as fortnightly film-screenings. The ultimate aim of this course is to provide students a ‘toolkit’ to decode the everyday politics of vision that guide and construct our lives.
Okei, pakko myöntää että suurin insentiivi tän kurssin valitsemiseen oli, että se tulee luultavasti olemaan aika helppo. Aihe on kyllä musta oikeasti kiinnostavan oloinen, varsinkin koska haluaisin ehkä tehdä jotain mediaan liittyvää myöhemmin. Ja leffat on aina plussaa.
An(other) IR - Views from the South
This course is experimental and speculative in nature. Its chief aim is to question the priority accorded to theories and perspectives of the International emanating from the North. It will draw upon different materials (taken from Postcolonial and subaltern studies, historiography, development theory, and the margins of contemporary IR) as well as non-traditional authors. The course is split in two halves: the first dealing with novel perspectives and new critiques from the perspective of Southern authors; the second applying these tools to a re-evaluation of the traditional theories and perspectives of the North. Each student is encouraged to embrace this spirit of experimentation to bring materials and ideas from other disciplines and from their own wanderings through the political rather than being reliant on textbook views from on-high.

Early Modern European Philosophy
The course examines a rich period of philosophic thought in European history through the work of the ideas and arguments of these philosophers and see how they engaged with the important debates of their day. In addition, students will gain an awareness of how early modern European philosophy is both a continuation and a departure from earlier schools of thought, as well as of how modern scholars have engaged with these important texts.
Jee, lisää filosofiaa! Sopii erinomaisesti politiikan kurssien kanssa. Kirjalistakin vaikuttaa todella kiinnostavalta. Harmi vaan, että tämä kurssi kestää vaan jouluun asti. Sex and Sexuality in Europe, 1100-1800
Since Michel Foucault’s History of Sexuality (1979), sex and sexuality have received increasing attention from cultural and intellectual historians. This course considers the history of sex and sexuality in pre-modern Europe: the primary focus will be on the late medieval and early modern periods, but ancient and early Christian will also be discussed, particularly in so far as they provide the basis for later attitudes. Topics will include prostitution, homosexuality, pornography, sex manuals, sex and the Church, sex crimes, and sex and marriage. Particular discussion will consider the extent to which it is possible to talk about sexual identity in the pre-modern period, the relationship between religion and attitudes to sex, whether there was a ‘reformation of manners’ in the early modern period, the significance of early ‘libertine’ writings, and the extent to which notions about sex and sexuality based on an understanding of the 19th and 20th centuries can be applied to the early modern period. Related themes, for which the course will provide insight, include gender history, the history of the body, and medical history. Primary sources will form an important part of the course, and these will include visual and literary sources.

Africa in the Global Political Economy
The course examines Africa’s role in the making of the modern global political economy. The course begins with an introduction to the methodological and political issues related to the production of knowledge about Africa. The first part of the course examines Africa’s role in the historical development of the modern world, from the transatlantic slave trade to struggles for independence, with a particular emphasis on the experience, character and legacy of colonialism. The second part of the course explores Africa’s postcolonial condition and examines a range of contemporary issues, such as authoritarian rule; debt, structural adjustment and neoliberal reform; the politics of ‘slums’; the role of NGOs; and the current discourse about ‘failed states’ in Africa. Throughout the course contending perspectives and interpretations of Africa’s politics and international relations will be considered, paying attention to questions of eurocentrism, and the writings of African scholars. The course also includes screenings of films, mainly by African directors, which complement the exploration of the themes of the course through academic literature.

Yugoslavia: History and Disintegration
The disintegration of Yugoslavia began in the early 1990s, leading to wars in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. The latest (last?) phase of this process is the declaration of independence from Serbia by KosT
ovo of February 2008. Yugoslavia’s break-up and the resulting wars have generated a vast scholarly (and often not so scholarly) literature and inspired a heated academic debate. Paradoxically, while most authors writing about former Yugoslavia accept the importance of history for an understanding of the country’s disintegration, they treat history – especially pre-1945 history – with little serious interest. The main aim of this course is to examine the history of Yugoslavia and former Yugoslav peoples and place the recent wars in a historical context.
The course begins by providing a background to the medieval history of the region, when Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia established powerful regional kingdoms before they were subjugated to Habsburg and Ottoman imperial rule. The legacy of the medieval states and of the imperial rule is analysed throughout the course. Other main topics studied include: emergence of South Slav nationalisms in the nineteenth century, including the Yugoslav Idea; the First World War and creation of Yugoslavia; political and cultural history of the interwar Yugoslav kingdom; occupation, resistance and collaboration in the Second World War; communist takeover; Tito-Stalin conflict of 1948; Yugoslav road to socialism; dissent and opposition; cultural developments during socialism; political and economic crisis of the 1980s; disintegration and wars of the 1990s; international intervention.
